A special thank you!

The band would like to say a massive heartfelt thank you to Jason Smith for everything he has done for us over the last couple of months.

A very good friend to the band and a fabulous MD who has been our constant since the Area Contest. Not only has he covered rehearsals while we auditioned for a new MD, he prepared us well for the Beamish March and Hymn Contest and our concert today in Saltburn.

As a band, we feel very privileged to have spent the last three months with him and we have enjoyed all of his engaging rehearsals and enthusiasm. We are more than sure there will be more opportunities in the future to have him back in front of the band. You are one of a kind Jason!

Thank you also to our good friends at Felling Band for sharing your MD with us during this transition period. Words are not enough to say how much we appreciate this.

After the concert yesterday, Jason handed over the reins to our new MD Gavin Brown who officially takes over. We are very much looking forward to our next chapter and seeing where our journey takes us.

This morning some members of the band attended a very special service in Durham Cathedral. Our 3rd Cornet player Helen was ordained as Deacon and has been called to serve at St Nicholas' Church in Durham. Helen has worked hard towards today and it was an honour to be there to support her.

The band would like to wish her, St Nicholas' Church and her parishioners the best of luck as she starts her next chapter as Deacon. Many congratulations Helen!

The band finally had it's first outing of the summer season today at one of our favourite venues, Saltburn Bandstand, thanks to the Saltburn 500 Club. A windy, but enjoyable day to play to a fabulous and appreciative audience.

The soloist for today was none other than the newly crowned Durham Music Service Musician of the Year, Dan playing The Acrobat.

We are also pleased to announce that Gareth Young has returned to the band on 2nd Trombone after having a break of 20+ Years. He has settled straight back into it and now completes our fabulous Trombone Section.

We would like to say a big thank you to Jason, our conductor today and also to Gavin and Nic on Principal Cornet and Flugel respectively for helping us out today. Your help is much appreciated.

A big thank you goes to Ray and David for helping us out for the contest as well, your help is very much appreciated. Our new Musical Director, Gavin Brown, came along to support the band.

Our last thank you goes to the DCBBA (Durham County Brass Band Association) and all of the volunteers who arranged and organised a fabulous contest in a wonderful venue.

The band are delighted to announce that Gavin Brown will take over the helm as the new Musical Director at the start of July.

Gavin has had lots of playing and conducting experience over the years as Brass Bands play a big part of his life. This includes being part of the Household Troops Band, Salvation Army and most recently, Musical Director of Appleby Town Band. He also currently plays Solo Cornet for the Ever Ready Band.

On accepting the role, Gavin had this to say about his appointment:

""It's a privilege to accept the role of Musical Director with Bearpark & Esh Colliery Band. Brass banding has been a passion of mine from a young age, and I'm fortunate to enjoy being on a journey that includes playing and conducting. I'm excited to begin this next chapter with a dedicated and hardworking group of musicians."
