The Band had a very enjoyable afternoon spent at Saltburn Bandstand. Unfortunately, our audience got caught up in the rain and moved to shelter under the umbrellas and trees. The Band carried on regardless and stayed dry in the Bandstand. Today was the last appearance at Saltburn for the Band this year and we hope to be invited back next season. A big thank you goes to Sean for helping us out today on Euphonium.
The Band escaped some of the showers to play to a busy Beamish Museum audience. A big thank you goes to all of our helpers today who covered due to holidays.
As part of our CD Project this year, we decided to open the design of the front cover out to Year 6 Children in 3 Primary Schools that have connections with the Band: Bearpark Primary School, Esh Winning Primary School and Pittington Primary School. The Year 6 Children were given the huge task of bringing together a film themed cover including the name and picture representation of what music will be on. We left it very open ended to allow their imaginations to run wild. Yesterday, our Life President, Dr Lamb did the difficult job of judging the winner. He chose a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place from each school and then an overall winner. Dr Lamb chose a winner from each school, along with a second and third place. He was delighted with how creative the children have been. He chose an overall winner who will get their design printed onto the front cover of the CD. The winner also gets a family cinema ticket to see a film of their own choice. The overall winner was Ella Docherty from Pittington Primary School. We would like to say a massive congratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone else for taking part.
Today has seen the Band play in the Durham Miners Gala. The atmosphere was great and the new polo shirts went down a treat. A big thank you goes to all of our supporters on the steps outside Waterstones, both going in and out. Happy Birthday goes to our learner Leila, we hoped you enjoyed the whole crowd singing to you. A massive thank you also goes to Jordan, David, Yvan, Christian, Emma, John, Garry, Steady, Les and Helen for helping us out today. Thank you goes to Doreen and Roy Lambeth who took photos of the Band during the day.
We even had a celebratory drink in the pub after we had finished playing. We even had our very own community police officer as our photographer. Tonight has seen the Band perform at the annual Pre Durham Miners Gala Concert in Newhouse Club tonight for the Esh Winning Banner Group. The Band will be up bright and early on Saturday to take the Esh Winning and West Rainton School Banner into the Gala.
The Band competed in the DCBBA 'Picnic in the Park' Contest this afternoon. Although we didn't come away with any prizes, the Band played well and we received some excellent remarks from the adjudicator. A Big thanks must go to Dan, Connor, Abi and Colin for helping us out today. A big thank you also goes to Hugh Stephenson for allowing us to use some photos of the Band from today.
The Band have had the pleasure of playing at the wonderful venue of Ushaw College this afternoon. Despite the weather being lovely the grass was too wet for us to play outside. We had a very appreciative audience who got a sneak preview of our Picnic in the Park Programme for tomorrow's Picnic in the Park Contest. Today's outing was not without its problems however. Our principal cornet player Michael is unwell today and was unable to play so a massive thank you goes to Michael Fairless for stepping in at last minute to help out. Our conductor Phillip also got stuck at work so thank you to our percussionist Alan Beaumont for stepping in to conduct the first part of the concert and to Alan Tullet for jumping onto the kit last minute. A big thank you to all of our deps today we really do appreciate you giving up your time to help us and also, a big thank you to the staff at Ushaw College for being so understanding.
Tonight has also seen the Band have a "pre-Contest" Social Night at Alishaan's Restaurant in Durham. |
